What Is Bacteria?

Bacteria itself is microscopic, although the damage it causes is easily visible.By the time you notice the damage from bacteria, chances are that it has been present for days.

How Is Bacteria Spread?

Bacteria is spread with wind, water and a gardener's tools, insects and even by our hands as we tend to the plants.This is the main reason that it is crucial to wash our hands thoroughly before and after working in the garden, and washing our tools after we use them or as we change plant beds. The spread of bacteria can be avoided by not working in a wet garden, such as after a rain. It is also why we only compost healthy garden waste, as some bacteria require high temperatures to be destroyed, that might not be reached in all parts of the compost pile.

Is All Bacteria Harmful?

Much of the bacteria found in a healthy garden is beneficial, and helps break down organic material.The correct balance of good and bad bacteria can be managed by organic gardening practices.
