Fill the container with shredded paper. You may use any waste paper you have, as long as it is not glossy and highly colored with ink. Newspaper works perfectly as well. If you do not own a shredder, simply tear the paper into thin strips. You are trying to create a fluffy, light bedding.

When filling for the first time, add enough shredded paper to fill the container to the brim. By the time you moisten it, the level will be greatly reduced. The goal is to have the bin at least half full, if not more, when moist. This allows for the compost to be added, without overflowing the bin.

I am using a foam container that held frozen Christmas foods. It seems to be the perfect choice for a sturdy, light-proof unit.
