Signs That Your Plant Light Needs To Be Replaced

How Long Do Full Spectrum Plant Lights Last?

By , About.com Guide

Indoor gardening would not be possible for most people, without additional lighting. Luckily, plant lighting is readily available, and can be found in most hardware and big box stores. Plant lights do not last forever. There are signs that your plant light needs to be replaced, that are easy to recognize.

Noise - Some plant lights are just plain noisy. Look for reviews and ask other gardeners if the plant lights that they use make any noise. Bulbs that are quiet when fresh, can become noisy as they age. This is a sign that they need to be replaced.

Plant Response - Plants that are growing under failing grow lights become elongated (referred to as leggy) and often become faded. If your normally healthy herbs start to grow tall and sparse, or the leaves fade away then become brown, it is time to replace the bulb.

Manufacturer's suggested life- Every brand of plant light comes with a manufacturer's recommended replacement period. This is the length of time that the bulb is expected to offer the full strength that is needed for a plant's healthy growth. Replace your bulbs on schedule, and your plants should continue to grow lush and healthy.

Plant lights can continue to light up for months past their prime. It is important to replace them when they are no longer supplying your indoor garden with sufficient light, and not wait for them to blow out.
