Here is a public service announcement for a cold January afternoon:
If you are buying seeds for your gardens this year, please, look for words like Organic, Open pollinated, Heirloom and the like. Clearly, if the words Monsanto were on the package, you would not buy it. However, you can not always be sure where the seeds came from that the seed catalog is selling. After all, unless they say that the seeds are from their own farm, they are seed dealers, not seed growers.
CRG: Council For Responsible Genetics, has a comprehensive page of safe seed resources. You may find some surprising information about the companies that you once thought were not affiliated with Monsanto. If you disagree with CRG's information, I urge you to write directly to the company in question, and ask questions.
This is the time of year when gardeners get a glint in their eye and start buying all the different varieties for the new season they can. Just take a moment to find out exactly what you are buying. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to post the question in the forums, so we can help find out where your seeds are going to come from.
