Why Should An Herb Gardener Care About Worm Bins?

I have said it before and I will say it again. If you have a little room under your kitchen sink, you should have a worm bin. I created avisual step by step, showing how to make a simple bin. This one is made from a foam box with lid, that would otherwise go to the dump. It was a perfect way to recycle, the perfect bin container, and an excuse to have yet another worm bin, making compost with my food scraps. After looking through my photos, let me know if there is anything that seems unclear. I have a lot more photos of the process for clarification if needed.

You may wonder why you need a worm bin. After all, you only have a few herbs in pots on your windowsill, right? Three reasons to have a worm bin :

  • Practically free compost-You have to throw all your organic waste away, why not add it to the worm bin to make fresh compost?
  • Your herbs need the best soil to thrive-Since your herbs are in smaller pots, the soil should not become compacted and you will need to lightly fertilize. The composted worm dirt will serve both of these needs.
  • Get a jump on spring- Creating compost takes time. If you start a worm bin now, you will have compost to add to your spring herbs.

Worm, bins make great gifts for your gardening friends. If you are planning on starting one, and live in the Northern growing regions, you will have to order your worms right away. The worm farms stop shipping due to the fragility of worms that have to travel in freezing weather. The worms I used, were purchased from this worm farm. I am not affiliated in any way, simply a fan of fast service and high quality vermiculture worms.
