I am making salve right now. I love to make salves and balms for all sorts of reasons. The most important is my baby's bum. I use herbal salves for diapered babies, chapped skin, milking goat's udders and even shallow scrapes.
One of my favorite ways to make a salve is to use fresh herbs. The problem is that the water from the freshness is what can harbor bacteria in the finished product. To use a fresh herb to make a salve, make a decoction of the herbs and then when you add your oils and wax, you simmer gently until all the water is evaporated. Voila! A salve from fresh herbs without the problems that the moisture from fresh herbs can cause.
